 Which thing is your life's wake-up call?

This was Marília Mendonça, a famous 26 years old Brazilian singer.

Last year, in November 2021, she was heading to a show on a plane with four other people when it hit transmission lines in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. The plane crashed. She and everyone else onboard died. It was a tragic loss that shocked our whole country.

She was at the peak of her career, and had several plans to take it to the next level. If you had looked at her Instagram stories on the morning before her death, you’d have seen that she called several random fans and talked to them, besides sharing her workout that morning. She was happy, confident and excited for everything she was planning to do. Little did she know that she had only a few more hours to live.

Her death, as sad as it was, completely changed my life for the better. And how? Because it was a quick reminder that we never know when our path or anyone else’s path in this world will end. So hug more, enjoy life, head to the beach, show your close people how much you love them!

It taught me to love and value those who are important in my life, because I never know when it will be over. They can be gone forever, at any time.

After her passing, I learned to tell my mother and every single other important family member how much they mean to me. I’ve learned to appreciate and to be grateful for their presence in my life, and show that not only in words, but most importantly, in actions.

I used to be too shy to say a simple “I love you”, but I now always make sure to let them know how much I love them. My brother, my mother, my grandmother who’s almost 2000 kilometers away from me, my aunts and my cousins who are still very young children…. 

All of them are very important people to me.

At the same time, her death taught me to be careful about how I treat other people, what words I say to them, as well as to avoid any unnecessary fighting or arguing.

In short, her passing taught me to value the important things in life.

I’ve become even more human, even more empathetic, even more compassionate. And that is something that I really, 

i really hope to pass on to my children one day.
